In 356 BC Alexander the Great
conquered the area but was not able to hold it.
Emperor Babur linked the region to
the Moghul Empire during the 15th and 17th centuries. The region was then taken
over by the Sikhs and then in 1849 by Britain.
The British took control over the
tribal area. The Pathans and Balichi people revolted and there were a number of
wars from 1891 till 1898.
The British had to employ several
forces, Punjab Irregular Forces, the Frontier Constabulary, to control the
frontier.
1893 the Indian Government Foreign
secretary Mortimer Durand and Afgan Emir established the border with Afghanistan.
1901 the North-West Frontier was
governed by a number of tribal agencies.
1947 India became independent and
Britain withdrew all military forces from the tribal territory. The North-West
Frontier Province joined Pakistan
